Inspired by Bruce Chatwin’s novel In Patagonia, Jung Ho Jung took an SL2, followed the Ruta 40 south, and portrayed the seemingly endless expanses of Argentina. In our interview he talks about his fascination with the landscape and why he compares Leica cameras to cats.

What made you want to take photographs in Patagonia? Was there something particular about the region that fascinated you?
I visited Patagonia for the first time to take poster photographs to be used in a television program. While working, I documented the surrounding scenery whenever I had a spare moment. Travelling the vast continent of South America took a very long time, of course; and most of the time I documented the passing scenery from the car window. I exclaimed at the bleak yet exceedingly beautiful scenery many times, and was unable to tear my eyes away from it even for a moment.
Before the trip, I had read Bruce Chatwin’s travelogue In Patagonia, but I could never have envisaged the vast and desolate scenery described in the book. It is something one needs to go and see for oneself. Try speeding along the Ruta 40 highway that goes to the ends of the world and you will be able to feel the depths of happiness of a traveller standing by the road, even in complete solitude.

Please tell us about a particularly special experience on the trip!
It happened while trekking on a glacier. The crampons caught around my ankle and I rolled, falling 5 meters below the glacier. When I came to my senses, I found I was grabbing my Leica camera tightly in my hand. The camera was not damaged and didn’t even have a single scratch. Actually, in Cuba, while riding a horse, I fell rolling into the mud and then too, thanks to the extra-rugged Leica, not a single speck of dust got into the lens. All my travelling companions were surprised!

What was your route? Which countries did you pass through?
This time I only visited Argentina. Passing through Buenos Aires and Iguassu, I arrived in Patagonia. In Patagonia, I was in El Calafate, which boasts of a national glacier park, and El Chaltén, which has Monte Fitz Roy. Then I travelled to Ushuaia, which is also called “the end of the world.”

Please tell us what camera you used and what you liked about the experience!
I use a Leica SL2 camera for those instances where focusing is important. It was convenient because I could apply various features when capturing fast-moving figures or still objects. In particular, the silent shutter feature was extremely useful in quiet environments. Currently, I use it for large prints that require high definition.

Leica SL2

It's your choice.

You have said there were two perfect things in the world: a cat and a Leica. Please tell us about the similarities between the two!
Should I say it’s the feeling of satisfaction one gets from merely looking at them? Kinetically speaking, the movements of a cat are close to perfection, and I’m constantly surprised by its various postures and agility. It’s the same with the Leica. The weight of its body in your hand and its sharp design are so similar to the elegance of a cat. The speed with which the snapshot feature quickly captures fast-moving objects, makes me wonder whether it was inspired by the swiftness of a cat quickly snatching its prey when it hunts.

What are your next projects?
I’m currently interested in city redevelopment projects, and the resulting problem of the forced resettlement of the citizens. In Seoul, many districts are under massive renovation, and I have been documenting a few locations over several years. Also, I am currently documenting fading scenery in the outskirts of the metropolis. As they are not part of the urban development, they are unable to reap the benefits, and so are in slow decline. However, they have already become a familiar part of the cityscape, as they should. No matter the reason for pressing the shutter, beyond simple documenting or archive purposes, I hope to be a photographer who continuously explores and experiments through the medium of photography.
